Usability of iPad Gestures

Project Summary

Objective: Shortly after its introduction, the adoption of the iPad rapidly grew. Since it was well established and new interactions were being designed, I wanted to evaluate the usability of some basic gestures. I worked alongside two undergraduate students in a mentor role throughout the study.

Methods: Participants were asked to complete tasks on the Pizza Hut, Papa John’s, and Domino’s apps. I measured performance with first impressions, number of taps, perceived difficulty, satisfaction, and preference.

Outcomes: Overall, gestures which followed the participant’s preconceptions and cognitive model, such as, expanding and compressing lead to higher efficiency, smoother interactions, were perceived as more enjoyable, and preferred over those that do not. Participants’ first impressions were that Pizza Hut had the best first impressions, most preferred, with Domino’s being the least preferred. Also, the Pizza Hut app was more efficient (number of taps), and had less perceived difficulty. However, there was no significant differences in satisfaction.

Work performed: Mentor students, Study development, Moderate participants, Scenarios, Usability testing, Data collection/analysis, Presentation.
